 Fire/EMS honors 1946 line-of-duty death
May 30 marked the 80th anniversary of the line-of-duty death of Edgar C. Bair, a three-year member of the Newton Fire Department.
On May 24, 1946, Ed was the driver of an apparatus that was responding to the report of a bridge fire along the Missouri Pacific Railroad when the apparatus hit loose sand and rolled on U.S. Highway 81. Ed sustained multiple injuries in the accident. He succumbed to those injuries and passed away on May 30, 1946.
Last weekend at Greenwood Cemetery, the Newton Fire/EMS Honor Guard and C-Shift crews paid tribute to Ed and his sacrifice, ensuring it is never forgotten.
Rest easy, Ed.

Newton bike repair stations keep cyclists rolling
In recognition of World Bicycle Day this past Wednesday, we're highlighting a resource that helps keep Newton cyclists rolling. The City of Newton is home to free self-service bicycle repair stations, conveniently located throughout the community for quick maintenance and repairs.
Bike repair stations can be found at:
- Athletic Park near the bike path and First Street bridge
- Centennial Park by the south restroom, near the mulch pile
- Fire/EMS Station 1 on Boyd Avenue
- NMC Health bike path
Each station is equipped with an air pump and a variety of attached tools, allowing cyclists to inflate tires and make minor repairs while on the go.
These stations were made possible through a grant secured by the Healthy Harvey Coalition, with installation assistance provided by City staff. We extend our thanks to Healthy Harvey and Walk & Roll Harvey County for their partnership in making bicycling in Newton more accessible, convenient, and enjoyable for residents and visitors alike.
For trails, parks, and more places to adventure to, check out the trails and parks map!
