- Have your cart out by 7 a.m. to ensure it doesn’t get missed!
- Set it out the night before if you can, 5 p.m. or after.
- Face your cart toward the street.
- Leave 3 feet between carts and other objects.
- Remove your cart from the curb within 24 hours after pickup.
New cemetery signage and search tool now available
Just in time for Memorial Day weekend, new signage has been installed at Greenwood and Restlawn Cemeteries to help visitors more easily locate loved ones' gravesites.
Through a partnership with CemSites, visitors can now search for burial locations directly from their phone while on-site. Simply scan the QR code displayed on the new signage, enter a name, and follow the map directions provided. Or you can type in cityofnewton.cemsites.com.
Whether visiting family, paying respects, or exploring family history, this new tool is designed to make cemetery navigation more convenient and accessible for everyone.
Special thanks to the City’s Parks Division, City Clerk’s Office, and Clerk Administrative Assistant for their work in bringing this project to life.

Reconstruction of South Spencer has resumed
Reconstruction of South Spencer Road has resumed after being put on hold last summer. The contractor, Kansas Paving, has begun phase 2 of the reconstruction project: the section between Southeast Third and Southeast 14th Connector.
The road is open to southbound traffic only. A detour of northbound traffic has been established on Hillside Road one mile to the east.
The first phase of the Spencer project, from East First to just south of Southeast Third Street, was completed last year. Construction was then paused because the unusually rainy summer made the unpaved Hillside detour route muddy and impassable. Paving of Hillside has since been completed.
Phase 2 is expected to take 8-12 weeks to complete, weather permitting. The project will then move on to the final section between Southeast 14th Connector and Southeast 14th Street.
 Storm debris cleanup
Residents whose trees were hit hard by the severe thunderstorm early this week may still be dealing with the cleanup of downed limbs and other debris. If you have tree limbs to be disposed of, here are a few options:
-
Bulky-Item Pickup: Stack branches by the curb and schedule a bulky-item pickup for $10 on your next trash day. Call 316-284-6070 or visit newtonkansas.com/bulkyitem to schedule.
-
Landfill Drop-Off: If you have access to a truck, you can take your own load to the Harvey County Transfer Station. Newton utility customers can pick up a free load coupon at the Utility Billing Office at City Hall. (Limit two coupons per household per calendar year. Coupons expire Dec. 31 if unused.)
-
Small Branches: If they fit in your trash cart and take up less than half the space, they can be included with regular trash collection.

 Celebrating Public Works Week
This week, we proudly recognized and celebrated the dedicated employees who keep our community running every day during National Public Works Week.
From maintaining streets, water lines, sewer systems, parks, stormwater infrastructure, sanitation services, and city facilities to responding during storms, emergencies, and extreme weather, Public Works employees often work behind the scenes to provide essential services that impact daily life for every resident.
Their work is seen in the roads we drive on, the water we rely on, the parks we enjoy, and the safe, clean community we call home. Whether it’s early mornings, late nights, weekends, or responding during difficult conditions, these teams consistently serve with professionalism, skill, and commitment.
Please join us in thanking our Public Works employees for the important work they do year-round to help keep our community safe, functional, and moving forward.
Celebrating EMS Week
During EMS Week, we thank the crews of Newton Fire/EMS for the skill, heart, compassion, and humanity they bring to every call and every person they serve because it is much more than just sirens.
A single shift may include a major medical emergency, a car accident, a mental health crisis, or helping someone who simply has nowhere else to turn. No two calls are ever the same, but the dedication to serving others never changes.
Behind every response is a team of highly trained EMTs, AEMTs, and paramedics who continue to show up for this community day after day, holiday after holiday, and storm after storm.
The impact of EMS goes far beyond emergency response, and our community is stronger because of the people who answer those calls.
