Parks staff mowing at Greenwood Cemetery.
Annual Cemetery cleanup begins next week
It’s that time of year again. City staff will begin the annual spring cleanup at Greenwood and Restlawn Cemeteries starting next week.
As part of this process, all decorations such as artificial flowers and other adornments not placed in permanent vases will be removed and respectfully discarded. If you have items you’d like to keep, please plan to remove them by Monday, April 27.
Your help in preparing for the cleanup makes a big difference and helps keep our cemeteries looking well-maintained and welcoming for all visitors.
For questions or concerns, please contact the cemetery office at 316-284-6082.
Parks staff talk with Slate Creek elementary students about trees on Arbor Day.
Celebrating Arbor Day with Slate Creek Elementary
In celebration of Arbor Day, Parks staff recently visited Slate Creek Elementary School to plant a tree alongside students and staff.
The event provided a hands-on opportunity for students to learn about the importance of trees, including the role they play in improving air quality, providing shade, supporting wildlife, and enhancing the overall beauty of our community. Staff shared insights on proper tree planting and care, helping students understand how small actions today can have a lasting impact for years to come.
Planting a tree is more than just an activity – it’s an investment in the future. This Arbor Day effort reflects the City’s ongoing commitment to maintaining a healthy and vibrant urban forest while engaging the next generation in stewardship and sustainability.
Thank you to Slate Creek Elementary for partnering with us to celebrate Arbor Day in a meaningful way!

City administrative staff selecting designs for their pottery pieces at Gallery Mostaza.
Honoring City of Newton administrative professionals
If you’ve ever called, stopped in, or needed help from the City, chances are you’ve been assisted by one of our administrative professionals.
They serve as the front line of customer service, working day in and day out to support residents, answer questions, and keep operations running smoothly. Their knowledge, organization, and positive approach make a difference in every interaction.
This week, we also had the chance to spend some time together at Gallery Mostaza, where staff glazed their own pottery pieces, with plenty of guidance (and patience!) from owners Isaac and Karina Shue. It was a fun way to connect, get creative, and celebrate the team behind the scenes.
Thank you to our administrative staff for the important role you play in serving our community! Your contributions truly deserve to be celebrated every day.
Mostaza owner Karina Shue provides direction to City administrative professionals as they glaze their pottery.

Coupons are available for pickup at City Hall at the third-floor reception desk and will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis.
If you’ve been considering planting a tree this spring, this is a simple and affordable way to get started!

2026 Water Quality Report now available
The 2026 Water Quality Report is now available on our website. The annual report offers a snapshot of the quality of the drinking water that we provided last year. It details where your water comes from, how it’s treated, what it contains, and how it compares to state and federal standards. It's transparency to help you feel confident that the water provided to you and your family is safe.
If you would like a paper copy of the report, please contact the Engineering Office at 316-284-6020.
