Swinging for a cause at 6th annual Shield 39 Tournament
Members of Newton Fire/EMS and Newton Police Department recently participated in the 6th Annual Shield 39 Golf Tournament, with Fire/EMS Honor Guard also presenting the colors to open the event.
The tournament brings together first responders and community members in support of Shield 39’s mission, created in memory of Sgt. Levi Minkevitch (badge #39) to serve unforeseen needs and protect the future of law enforcement in Newton and surrounding communities. The organization also provides scholarships to students pursuing careers in law enforcement, as well as to family members of those who serve.
We’re grateful to the organizers for continuing this meaningful tradition and to Sand Creek Golf Course for hosting another successful event.

City employees celebrate annual bracket challenge
For the third year, City employees brought the energy to our annual Choose Newton Bracket Challenge, adding a little in-house rivalry to the madness of the NCAA men’s and women’s tournaments.
After weeks of upsets, buzzer-beaters, and impressive predictions, Civil Engineer Eduardo Hernandez claimed the top spot in the men’s bracket, while Airport Operations Specialist Andrew Baeza came out on top in the women’s bracket!
Winners were recognized with trophies, a small gift card, and, perhaps most memorable of all, the ultimate honor of their own face on a stick.
Congratulations to our winners and to everyone who joined in the fun!

A large pile of grass clippings improperly dumped into a culvert, creating a stormwater obstruction and potential drainage issue.
Protecting Newton's waterways starts with awareness
National Environmental Education Week is just around the corner, and it’s a great time to highlight how small actions can make a big impact right here in Newton.
One of the most important ways we protect our local environment is through stormwater quality. Our team works year-round to monitor and protect stormwater, with regulations in place to help prevent pollution and keep our waterways clean.
If you ever notice something that doesn’t look right – such as dumping, spills, grass clippings intentionally blown into the road or drain, or anything entering a storm drain that shouldn’t – please report it.
Keeping our waterways clean is a shared responsibility, and it starts with awareness!

Trash collection information and reminders
Forgive the repeat message – we're still having some residents miss their trash collections as we make adjustments to our staffing and routes.
Trash Reminder: Carts out by 7 a.m. to avoid missed pickup!
Collection times may vary week to week, so don’t count on the same pickup time every collection day. As long as it is between 5 p.m. the day prior and 7 a.m. on collection day, you will be good to go.
Quick tips:
- Set it out the night before if you can – 5 p.m. or after.
- Face the cart toward the street, handle toward the house.
- Leave 3 feet between carts and other objects.
- Remove from the curb within 24 hours after pickup.
- Help inform us of issues by reporting any concerns.
