Wood chips still available for public use
Current City wood chip pile update: Still a towering mountain of mulch magic!
Time to give your yards, planter boxes, and garden beds a fresh boost – grab a shovel and haul some wood chips to add color, texture, and that fresh earthy scent to your outdoor spaces.
You can pick them up at Centennial Park, just off East 14th Street near the smaller restrooms and open parking lot. A reminder that the wood chips/mulch are meant for Newton residents, for smaller projects, and to be shared by everyone!
Extremely windy conditions lead to increased fire danger.
Windy conditions raise fire danger across the community
When trees start bending and winds pick up, it’s a sign to be extra cautious. With strong winds expected over the next 3-5 days, the risk of fire spreading quickly is significantly increased. Even a small spark can escalate under these conditions.
Newton Fire/EMS asks residents to take the following precautions:
-
Avoid activities that create sparks: Please refrain from outdoor burning or welding on windy days.
-
Use caution with open flames: Be mindful when grilling, especially with charcoal or wood. Never leave fires unattended, and ensure fire pits are fully extinguished – embers can reignite even days later.
-
Dispose of smoking materials properly: Completely extinguish cigarettes and never discard them on the ground.
-
Reduce potential fuel sources: Clear dry grass, leaves, and debris from around your home to help limit fire spread.
-
Report concerns promptly: If you see smoke or fire, report it immediately.
Stay aware, stay safe, and help protect our community!
Kelsie and Dustin Housh's son watches each week for the trash day pickup.
A front row seat to trash day and local celebrities
One local family recently shared and tagged the City in a photo of their child eagerly watching the trash truck roll by – something he looks forward to each week. It’s a simple routine, but for many kids (and let’s be honest, plenty of adults too), those big trucks and early morning routes bring a little extra excitement to the day.
For our Sanitation team, it’s all part of the job – but moments like these are a good reminder that the work they do doesn’t just keep our community clean, it also creates connections and joy in unexpected ways.
We love seeing how these everyday services make a difference in your lives. Thank you to Kelsie and Dustin Housh for sharing this sweet moment. If your child keeps an eye out for the trucks each week, we’d love to hear about it!

Detective Salmans presents to staff at Conrade Insurance about personal safety.
NPD connects with local business on safety
Juvenile Crimes Det. Brian Salmans with the Newton Police Department recently visited both Newton and Wichita Conrade offices to provide safety training for their staff.
Det. Salmans shared practical, real-world guidance on staying aware and prepared, with a focus on everyday safety. His approach made the information easy to understand and apply, and even brought a little humor to the conversation along the way.
We appreciate the opportunity to connect with local organizations and help support a safe, informed community!
