Fire/EMS staff in the cafeteria having breakfast and connecting with students at South Breeze Elementary School.
Fire/EMS and Police celebrate School Breakfast Week
During National School Breakfast Week, some of our Fire/EMS personnel stopped by South Breeze Elementary to join students for breakfast. They spent time in the cafeteria visiting with kids, sharing laughs, and building positive connections. The morning was a big hit – our crews even received a few birthday party invitations!
Later in the week, Police officers spent the morning visiting with Slate Creek Elementary students, sharing plenty of high-fives and fist bumps. Moments like these are a great reminder that building positive connections with our youngest community members can start with something as simple as breakfast together.
Thank you to everyone who helped make these mornings a little brighter! Our departments value opportunities like this to connect with students and build positive relationships in our community.

We kicked things off with students from Newton High School’s Jobs for America’s Graduates program, and their display has already sparked great conversations. Now we’re looking ahead to the next organizations ready to step into the spotlight.
If your group has been thinking about participating, now’s the time! Available months include May, July, November, and December. Review the guidelines and apply at the link below to secure your spot!

Newton Next designing the future of Newton
What kind of housing does Newton need? What kind of business growth? What should happen with the old Dillons site at 320 N. Main? Are there streets in Newton where you have safety concerns?
You have the chance to share your thoughts on questions like these in an online open house as part of the Newton Next comprehensive planning process.
Community members are invited to review a draft vision statement and explore priorities for housing, transportation, recreation, and economic growth. Participants can also give feedback on preliminary site design ideas, including the redevelopment of 320 N. Main.
Newton Next is about dreaming big, gathering input, and shaping a shared vision together. Take a look, share your thoughts, and let’s keep the conversation going!
Police and Fire/EMS visit Slate Creek for Career Day
City staff from the Newton Police Department and Fire/EMS recently visited Slate Creek Elementary to share about careers in our community. SRO Jefferis, Animal Control Officer Lyndsey Robinette, and Fire/EMS staff Garrett McEachern spoke with 1st grade students about their jobs, the tools they use, and how they help keep Newton safe.
Students asked lots of great questions, got a close-up look at some of the equipment- including a visit from ACO Robinette’s dog-and learned how exciting public service careers can be. These visits are a fun way for City staff to connect with students and inspire the next generation!
