Hooves, hustle, and high spirits for Donkey Basketball
A sincere thank you to Newton High School for hosting another memorable evening of donkey basketball. The event brought together students, staff, first responders, and community members for a night filled with laughter, friendly competition, and school spirit.
We’re proud to share that first responders from the Newton Police Department came out with the win against the students. While the game was entertaining, the greatest success of the evening was the strong community support shown for NHS: Proceeds from the event will benefit the prom committee, helping create a special and lasting experience for students.
Thank you to NHS for continuing this fun tradition and to everyone who attended and supported the cause!
 Newton Next Depot District vision
During the Newton Next Planning & Design sessions, conceptual drawings were created to show what could be possible for the former Dillons property at 320 N. Main and the surrounding Depot District. These renderings can help our community imagine the future of this important gateway into Newton!
Get a closer look at the designs on our Facebook page.
Newton Next is about dreaming big, gathering input, and shaping a shared vision together. Take a look, share your thoughts, and let’s keep the conversation going! If you weren’t able to attend the workshops, you can give your feedback online:
Celebrating National Engineering Week
This week, we’re proud to highlight our own City Engineer Chris Ciardella and Civil Engineer Eduardo Hernandez!
Chris earned his Civil Engineering degree in 2012 and has been a licensed Professional Engineer (PE) since 2017, holding licenses in both Kansas and California. He joined the City of Newton nearly five years ago and has served as City Engineer for the past year.
Chris enjoys working in a small-City engineering department because of the variety it brings and the opportunity to see projects from start to finish. He views his role as an investment in the community, making the best use of resources to strengthen infrastructure and ensure city systems work together efficiently.
Eduardo recently passed the Civil Principles and Practice of Engineering exam, administered by the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying. This milestone, combined with his Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering, successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering exam, and more than four years of qualifying experience, makes him eligible to receive his Professional Engineering license in Kansas.
Eduardo enjoys the strategic side of engineering and finding ways to improve infrastructure while enhancing the quality of life in the community. He especially enjoys working with the City’s GIS system and using data to support smart planning and decision-making.
Congratulations and thank you to Chris and Eduardo for helping make Newton a stronger and safer community!
