Winter weather to bring low temperatures and snow
With dangerously cold temperatures and snowfall expected, frozen pipes and hazardous road conditions are a concern. Please keep an eye on road conditions and your plumbing during this cold stretch.
In preparation for the snow, City crews have moved to round-the-clock 12-hour shifts, with support from the Streets, Sanitation, and Water divisions. Snow routes were pretreated with salt brine earlier this week, and multiple plows and support equipment will be deployed during the storm.
Residents are encouraged to stay off the roads when possible. If travel is necessary, please use the City’s designated snow route, which are the roads that will be treated by City crews.
If you're lucky enough to live on a snow route, the downside is that City plows may push more snow in front of your driveway. Unfortunately, there's no practical way for our drivers to prevent this. With a prolonged snowfall, the plows may have to make multiple passes by your house, so you might want to wait to shovel until after the road is cleared. Thank you for your patience!
If you experience a frozen or burst pipe, contact the City before calling a plumber. City crews can help determine whether the issue is on the public or private side and shut off water at the meter to prevent further damage. Call the Service Center at 316-284-6070 during business hours. After hours, call 9-1-1 and let dispatch know it’s a City of Newton Water issue.
