 2025 Election
Last call to run for Newton City Commission! Three seats on the Commission are up for election this November, and you have just a few days left to consider stepping up and making a lasting impact.
So far, incumbents Leroy Koehn and Rod Kreie and newcomer Jason Miller have filed to run. The top two vote-getters will get four-year terms, and the third highest will get a two-year term.
The deadline to file is at noon Tuesday, June 2. For more information on how to file, visit the County Clerk's Office in the Harvey County Courthouse.
 Water Conservation
Thanks to the recent rains, Newton avoided going into drought restrictions this week. But after years of persistent drought conditions, we're not out of the woods!
We still need to be smart with our water use, and we strongly encourage residents, business owners, and all community members to conserve water whenever possible to maintain the integrity of our safe, clean water supply.

Public Works
This week, our staff:
Parks & Cemetery
- Served the public throughout the Memorial Day weekend at Greenwood Cemetery helping locate the graves of loved ones. This was the first year the City has used solar lights for the flags, so they were able to remain up throughout the holiday weekend.
- Pick up trash and litter along Sand Creek and in all the parks.
- Continued work on the splash park.
Streets & Sanitation
- Put up snow fence for the Junior Rodeo (right).
- Cleaned out stormwater intakes after rain over the weekend.
- Replaced some curb and gutter in Area 1.
- Junk-Free Curbs Program: May 19-23, our inspector tagged 16 locations. Six were charged the $10 fee and 10 were taken care of by the resident.
Building/Zoning/Engineering
- Issued permits to install four swing sets at three City parks.
- Completed 49 inspections.
- Issued a Certificate of Occupancy to South Newton Donuts, 1305 Washington.
Water & Wastewater
- Participated in a nationwide cybersecurity drill and encouraged staff to operate the Wastewater Treatment Plant without computer controls for an afternoon.
- Closely monitored groundwater levels at the Mission Water Treatment Plant.

 Newton Public Schools
Our partners at Newton Public Schools have been working with a group of staff, parents and community leaders over the past year to develop a new vision for our school facilities and programs. Now they need your input!
Learn more about the group's process and findings, and take the Newton Facility Master Plan Survey to share your thoughts and ideas. The results of this survey will help guide final recommendations from the committee to the Board of Education.
