 Police Department
On Thursday, Newton officers teamed up with the staff from Opportunity Academy who laced up and faced off against OA students in an end-of-year kickball showdown. This year marks six years of this friendly, relationship-building battle. The competition was fierce, the plays were bold… but in the end, Team NPD got the win!
USD 373's Opportunity Academy is a personalized learning school that provides individualized support for students to set and reach academic and career goals that they might not receive in traditional school. We are grateful for opportunities like this for positive interactions with youth in our community!

Fire/EMS safety
Members of Newton Fire/EMS were invited by KAKE News to share their thoughts on EMS responder safety last week after the tragic killing of a Kansas City firefighter/paramedic while on duty on April 27. Our staff emphasized the need to maintain situational awareness and strong partnerships with law enforcement. See the KAKE story
 Park & Public Works
The growing & mowing season is well underway, with City staff now keeping parks, cemeteries, rights-of-way, treatment plants, and other City grounds trimmed and tidy.
City environmental control staff is also busy taking complaint reports about tall grass and weeds. It's a good time to remind residents that weeds and grass are not allowed to grow taller than 12 inches within the City. If we get a complaint, our inspector will come out to verify it, and then the property owner will be given 5 days to mow. If no action is taken, the City will mow the property, and the owner will be billed for the work. It's a time-consuming process, and the neighborhood can get frustrated in the meantime – so be a good neighbor and keep your yard mowed!
MANAGER'S CORNER
Public Service Recognition Week
For more than 30 years, Public Service Recognition Week has served as a dedicated opportunity to celebrate public servants across the country and throughout the public sector. I am grateful for all the ways our City employees support and care for members of our community and members of our organization, and for choosing a public service career.
It is an honor to work beside those who dedicate their professional lives to serving. Thank you for all that you do.
– Daniela Lujano Rivas, City Manager

 Fire/EMS
Newton Fire/EMS joined Newton Public Library's preschool story time this week for a little reading and show-and-tell. The kids enjoyed some firefighter-themed stories and then got a look at a real-life fire truck!
We're working with the library to schedule more City-related story times, including Police and Sanitation later this summer. Watch for details!
