 Arbor Day
Staff from the Parks Department celebrated Arbor Day by planting a tree at Northridge Elementary School this week. Students helped plant a sugar maple tree that will provide shade for decades to come. They also learned about tree planting and what it takes to care for a tree. We love our community collaborations!
 National Volunteer Week
April 20-26 is National Volunteer Week, and the public servants of the City of Newton have had numerous volunteer outreach opportunities. Among them, Aviation Director Brian Palmer read to local kiddos at Newton Public Library's preschool story time (above), and City Manager Daniela Rivas helped out a preschool classroom at Cooper Early Education Center (below).
City Desk
Come see us on Sunday, April 27 at Newton Open Streets! We will be debuting City Desk – an intentional outreach program to help City Commissioners and staff engage with the community, answer questions, have conversations, and support our residents in an informal setting.
We will be near the corner of 6th and Oak during Newton Open Streets from 1-5 p.m. Sunday. Stop by to chat, play yard games, and even "cone-nect" with Coney the orange traffic cone!
Newton Fire/EMS, Police, and Animal Control will also be at Open Streets, so come out and say hello while you enjoy this cool community event!

 Police Department
Thursday afternoon, Sgt. Craig Douglass met with a full house of community members at Newton Area Senior Center to talk all things NPD – from police functions, to sharing about how we do things and the "why's", to public safety, and how we all work together for a shared community wellbeing. From body cams to bike patrol, K-9s to dispatch, clearing up misconceptions such as certain quotas to hit (which we do not do here in Newton) scams and fraud, to City vs. County roles — nothing was off the table. We value opportunities to connect, inform, and work together!
