At Tuesday’s meeting, the City Commission approved a new long-term lease agreement with a hangar tenant and a $4.275 million bid for reconstruction of Runway 8-26 at Newton City/County Airport.
Flight instruction company Joe Bravo Aviation will lease office and hangar space in Hangar A at $2,000 per month for four years, with the option to renew for two additional two-year terms. Joe Bravo is based at Cook Airfield in Rose Hill and also has a location in Augusta. The company has been operating in Newton for the past year under a short-term lease.
The lease generates additional revenue for the airport versus using Hangar A strictly as a transient community hangar. The airport will retain one aircraft spot and some storage space in the hangar.
Reconstruction of Runway 8-26, the airport’s shorter crosswind runway, has been under design since last fall. The Commission approved the low bid from Dondlinger Construction, subject to approval and a grant funding offer from the Federal Aviation Administration. The local share of the project is $570,757, to be split evenly by the City and Harvey County as co-owners of the airport.
Newton’s airport, built during World War II, is one of the busiest in south-central Kansas. Its main 7,000-foot runway was reconstructed in 2013.
