 Happy Valentine's Day!
Newton, you're our Valentine! We love this community and our opportunity to serve. Here's a bit of fun to share the love from our City departments!
City Attorney's Office
We are pleased to welcome Baron Hoy as our new Assistant City Attorney/Prosecutor!
Baron is from Derby and earned his law degree from Washburn University and bachelor’s degree from Haskell Indian Nations University in Lawrence. During his time at Washburn Law, he earned an externship for U.S. District Court Magistrate Judge Birzer, the Prairie Band of Potawatomi Tribal Attorney, and remotely for United Talent Agency in Beverly Hills, one of the largest Hollywood agencies in the world. Additionally, he was selected as a student cohort at Stanford University for its Indigenous Economics Program under former U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. Starting his career, Baron practiced as a family law attorney, specializing in divorce, custody, wills and estates before joining the City. Welcome, Baron!

 Choose Newton
A series of new Choose Newton TV commercials began running this week on KWCH. The ads feature Aubrey and Nathan Wallace sharing their story of choosing to move to Newton in the past couple of years. The ads will run on Channel 12 and KWCH’s streaming platforms for the next six months in an effort to boost Newton's brand awareness and positive image across the state as a great place to call home.
You can also view all three ads on our YouTube channel.
 Winter Storm
City crews from Streets, Parks, Water, Wastewater, and Sanitation have all contributed to snow cleanup this week. Street maintenance staff switched to 12-hour shifts and began treating streets at 2:30 a.m. Wednesday. The entire snow route was plowed and treated with a salt and haydite mixture. Crews hauled snow piles out of the downtown district and municipal parking lots Wednesday night. Staff continued to monitor the snow route and retreat where needed due to cold temperatures. Now we will inspect and repair equipment in preparation for more snow predicted next week.
Presidents Day Holiday
Newton City offices will be closed Monday, Feb. 17 in observance of Presidents Day, which will also alter the trash pickup schedule.
Monday's trash pickup will be on Tuesday next week. Tuesday's route will run on Wednesday. Thursday and Friday routes will run as usual.
