Human Resources
Congratulations to our HR Coordinator, Meghan Rupp, for completion of the 2024 Emerging Leaders Academy. This prestigious professional development program, offered through the University of Kansas Public Management Center, equips public sector employees with the skills to step into leadership roles.
Meghan started with the City in 2015 in the Fire/EMS Department and moved to the HR Office in 2024. Congratulations, Meghan!

2025 Utility Rates
Newton utility customers will see adjustments to their utility rates reflected on their upcoming bills. The City Commission adopted a rate schedule in 2023 with gradually increasing water and sewer rates after more than seven years of no rate increases and dramatically increasing costs for City operations.
The total utility bill (water/sewer/trash) for a low user of 300 cubic feet of water in 2024 was $96.62. This year, it will be $102.18. For a 600 cubic feet user, the total bill in 2024 was $151.97. In 2025, their bill will be $161.76. You can find the full rate schedule on our website.

Newton Rec Commission
- The roof is going up on the new press box at Railer Field. It's expected to be complete before high school softball practice starts.
- The concrete work has been completed by City staff for the batting cages at Railer Field. NRC staff will install cage materials sponsored by the NHS Booster Club. This project also will be complete prior to softball season.
- The Railer Foundation continues to work on fundraising, promotions, and grant seeking for the Themian Park project. On May 30, they are planning a fundraising golf tournament at Sand Creek Station.
- The NRC and the City will partner to replace deteriorated concrete at the Okerberg Park skate park. City staff have patched the pavement many times, and it needs to be replaced for safety. The NRC will pay for the materials, and City staff will complete the work. The park will be closed during construction to move the equipment, remove and replace concrete, wait to cure, then reset equipment.
 2025 Fireworks
At next Tuesday evening's meeting, the City Commission will discuss the permitted dates and times of fireworks during this year's July Fourth season. State law permits sale and discharge from June 27 through July 5. In the past, Newton has allowed sales and discharge for at least four days to make business worthwhile for vendors and nonprofit fundraising.
If you have feedback on fireworks sales, plan to attend the meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday at City Hall or contact Commissioners ahead of time.
