Sharon at Crust and Crumb has become a Saturday favorite in Newton! If you have never ventured out on Saturdays from 8-11am to buy any of her delicious breads and pastries you need to try them soon.
Crust and Crumb is an artisan baker that sells sourdoughs, ciabatta, baguettes, and pastries such as croissants, Danish, and personal sized pies. One of the unique features about their bakers is that they grow their own heirloom Turkey Red Winter Wheat and mill and bake with it.
While Crust and Crumb is located in Downtown Newton, they are unique in that they are only open on Saturdays from 8-11am. They also sell out of their back entrance, along the alley, instead of through the main storefront. You can find them at 507b N. Main. Just make sure to head down the alley instead of down Main Street to pick up your delicious breads and pastries. Their garage door on the back of the business is usually open when they are selling, but with the cold weather we have been having sometimes it is closed to keep the warmth in.
Sharon has a business here in Newton because it is her home. When she first started she thought that she would have to take her breads to Wichita to sell to be able to make a living. While she does do some farmer's markets in Wichita the primary business is right here in Newton on Saturday mornings. Sharon said, "It has been such a blessing to be able to create fun sourdoughs and fine pastries and getting to come up with new fun flavors. And people come purchase and enjoy them. It is truly a dream come true."
The business in Newton has allowed Sharon to make many new connections with people in the community. Before starting Crust and Crumb, she worked for a large corporate flour milling company in Wichita. There she had very few connections to others in the community. She has enjoyed and had fun connection with new people on Saturday mornings and then seeing them around town.
Since they grow, mill, and bake with Turkey Red Winter Wheat, Crust and Crumb was asked to be on a show that features this type of wheat and the Mennonites. It's a PBS feature called America the Bountiful. The show should air around Wheat harvest season (June 2025). Make sure to watch and learn more about this amazing bakery right here in downtown Newton!
We are thrilled to have Crust & Crumb here in Newton and as part of our Choose Newton Main Street! Make sure to come downtown and support this amazing local business.
