  Police Department
Newton Police delivered gifts this week as part of the annual Blue Christmas. The program is designed to assist Newton families in need with gifts during Christmas time. The department takes nominations for deserving families and accepts donations beginning in early December. This year we were able to spread cheer to 57 kids from 24 families!
 Street & Sanitation
Street sweeping is year-round work. Street maintenance staff have two street sweepers out this week working to clean up fallen leaves so they don’t clog storm drains.
Also, with the new year coming, it may feel like a good time to declutter and purge. Remember, if you have large items to get rid of, you can schedule a bulky-item pickup for just $10 online or by calling 316-284-6070. Don’t just sit stuff at the curb without calling it in.
Junk-Free Curbs Program
Dec. 16-20: Our inspector tagged 27 locations. Eight scheduled a bulky-item pickup and were charged the $10 fee, six were charged the $20 fee, one was forwarded to the environmental control officer, and 12 were taken care of by the resident.
 Fire/EMS
The holiday season for Newton Fire/EMS typically includes at least one shift ringing the bell for Salvation Army of Harvey County. Firefighter/EMT Kyle Soldani and Firefighter/Paramedic Steve Gay greeted customers and took donations last week.
Avian Flu
Dozens of dead geese have been reported in recent weeks at the wetlands on Southwest 14th Street. City staff are coordinating with the Kansas Department of Wildlife & Parks, who believe the deaths are likely due to avian flu. The dead birds will be left where they are to let nature take its course.
KDWP advises that if you see a migratory bird acting abnormally, you should report it to their biologists at 620-342-0658. Do not handle any birds that appear sick or injured. If you have to handle a dead bird, wear disposable gloves, double bag it, and place it in your trash cart before disinfecting your hands and clothes.
