 Police K-9s
Congratulations to our K-9 unit for their performance at the Heart of America Police Dog Association annual certification! 26 K-9 teams from Iowa, Missouri, and Kansas participated. Lt. Jason Thompson and Ziva placed first in detector dog, and Officer Austin Sontag and Kilo placed third in patrol dog. We're very proud of our teams for their hard work and dedication!
Drive to Zero Kansas Traffic Deaths
Each year since 2013, more than 350 people are killed annually on roadways in Kansas, and thousands more are seriously injured as a result of traffic crashes. Across the U.S., more than 40,000 people are killed in crashes each year. These tragedies are preventable by taking a proactive and preventative approach that prioritizes traffic safety as a public health issue.
Kansas Drive To Zero is an initiative that recognizes the only acceptable number of deaths on Kansas roads is zero. To achieve this goal, the Drive To Zero requires a collaborative effort among transportation professionals, public health officials, law enforcement and emergency responders, community members, and many more. The City of Newton is proud to be part of this lifesaving initiative.

Data from the Kansas Communities That Care (KCTC) survey show that the work of D-FY and the student leadership group STAND is making a positive difference in youth substance use in Harvey County.
Drug-Free Youth Coalition
October is Youth Substance Use Prevention Month, and staff from Harvey County D-FY visited the City Commission this week to share their vision and the steps they are taking to increase protective factors and help kids in Harvey County communities. Since 2017, the coalition has seen a marked drop in youth use of alcohol, vaping, and marijuana in Harvey County, according to data from the Kansas Communities That Care (KCTC) survey.
The survey data showed Harvey County scored higher than the state average in the risk factors of Poor Family Management and Family Conflict, so those will be future areas of focus for D-FY.
