Be water wise!
Most household water use occurs from the use of toilets, washing machines, showers, baths, faucets, and leaks. You can apply some water savings tips below to help conserve water in you household, in turn helping to maintain the reliability of our water supply system.
-
Do full loads of laundry to maximize water usage: Typically, 15%-40% of indoor home water use comes from doing laundry. Save water by washing full loads of laundry or adjust your machine settings to match the load size.
-
Install low-flow showerheads: You can save as much as 15 gallons of water during a 10-minute shower using low-flow showerheads.
-
Turn off water: Teach your entire household to turn off the faucet while brushing their teeth or shaving.
-
Defrost food in the fridge: Instead of running frozen foods under hot water from the faucet, build in time to let them defrost in the refrigerator.
-
Manage outdoor water use: Equip all your water hoses with shut-off nozzles, and water your lawn or garden early in the morning or late in the evening, so the water lasts and is not immediately evaporated by the hot sun.
Remember, water is a precious resource, and we all need to use it wisely. Every little bit of savings helps!

 Wetland Park
It's sunflower season in Kansas! And the Rhoades Wetland Park is a perfect spot to enjoy them. The park is located at 1012 SW 14th Street, just west of the railroad crossing. In addition to the seasonal wildflowers, the park provides an excellent spot for birding and a chance for Newtonians to enjoy nature within the city limits. The park also incorporates birding-by-ear elements for blind and low-vision park users and five custom bird murals.
MANAGER'S CORNER
Building Community
This week, our CVB Coordinator Jen Lehman posed the question on Facebook, “What is your favorite thing about Newton?” Most respondents mentioned the word "community" in some way, shape or form. This was heartening to hear, as we at the City strive to make Newton stronger by building and sustaining connections in our community. Feeling welcomed and connected makes a big difference in the overall happiness and satisfaction of our lives and the lives of our residents.
If you have a moment today to read the comments (some examples below), I hope they make you smile like they did for me. We have a wonderful community full of amazing people. Together, we can continue to foster a city where everyone feels valued and connected.
– Daniela Lujano Rivas, City Manager
- I love the Sand Creek bike path. I spent many afternoons walking it with my kids to see the animals and plants along the way. And the small town feel Newton encompasses.
- The community honestly. Growing up here and raising my kids here, seeing how the community has come together in times of need. It's been a blessing.
- It's so quiet and safe here. Coming from a big place of a million people to this, it's been incredible. I love nighttime around here, there's no chaos, just peace.
- I love the small town feel and the close community!
- My favorite part of Newton is the free opportunities for the community to help build connectedness and provide access to all to learn, thrive, and be a part of our community!
- I love living in Newton! This town has so many beautiful and unique shops, restaurants, and activities for families! We are so thankful for our town.
- Small town community! I grew up here and graduated NHS. Proud to raise my kids and grandkids here! I appreciate how the community comes together for those who are in need of help or just to represent the town and all their hometown shops.
- I love how so many will help one another in this wonderful town. The town is clean, beautiful flowers/decor celebrating our pride on main roads, we have well-kept schools and parks for all to enjoy. So nice to have a nice, quiet and safe community to raise my family!
- Newton has people who truly care about maintaining a thriving community. They work hard at rejuvenating and making Newton beautiful.
