 Independence Day fireworks
Tents will start going up soon around town for annual Independence Day fireworks sales. The City Commission in January set the following schedule for fireworks sales and discharge:
You can BUY fireworks in Newton:
- 10 a.m.-10 p.m. June 27-July 4
You can SHOOT fireworks in Newton:
- 10 a.m.-10 p.m. June 28-29 and July 3
- 7 a.m.-10 p.m. July 4
Newton will have nine fireworks stands this year:
- T&M Fireworks – 1601 S. Anderson
- TNM Fireworks – 401 N. Meridian
- Bellion Fireworks – 1216 N. Main
- Ka-Boomers ½ Price Fireworks – 105 Manchester
- Wholesale Fireworks – 601 SE 36th St.
- Wholesale Fireworks – 1701 S. Kansas
- Wholesale Fireworks – 200 N. Meridian
- Big Show Fireworks – 1300 S. Kansas
- Friends of Harvey County ERT – 1601 W. First St.
Public Works
 Staff testing the new water storage tank on West First Street
- Staff is running tests and checking the new water storage tank that is now online on First Street. Demolition of the old tank and construction of the second new tank will begin later this summer.
- Water/Wastewater staff have cleaned 314,335 feet of sewer mains so far this year.
- Street staff performed crack sealing at the golf course parking lot this week to get ready for upcoming tournaments.
- Staff is receiving many requests for street closures and barricades for Independence Day block parties. If you're interested in a neighborhood block party, contact the City Clerk at 316-284-6015 or check the City website.
- Staff continues to work with our insurance company to gain approvals for repairs to airport hangars damaged in the May 19 wind storm.
Police
 Newton Police Department helped host the Newton Rec Commission Clubhouse kids on Friday, demonstrating our K-9 teams, drone, ERT equipment, and touring the police station and 911 operations. Thanks to NRC for including us in your summer day camp!
Warkentin House summer concerts
The Warkentin House has scheduled a summer concert series to support the nonprofit house museum:
A donation of $10 is suggested. The Parlor Concert will be inside the house; the others will be outside on the front porch, so bring your lawn chairs.

City Manager Daniela Rivas was featured on KMUW's weekly program The Range this week, discussing her path to leadership, her goals for Latina representation in public service, and how her parents' journey to the U.S. from Mexico influenced her work ethic and desire to serve.
