At Tuesday night’s meeting, the City Commission approved the plans and specifications and set a bid date of July 11th for the building at 214 E 6th that will be used for a Police Training Facility.
The City purchased the building across from City Hall on August 10th of 2023 and it was chosen for its proximity to other city facilities and size. The Police Department needs the space to train staff, hold large meetings of the entire force and have the space needed for other tasks as need arises.
The building had been re-roofed earlier in the year, a new garage door installed on the east side of the building and all substandard items have been removed in anticipation of this remodel. This project is being funded with remining funding in the Law Enforcement Center Project Improvement bond and special law enforcement funds so no additional bonding will be utilized.
The Commission also approved the Newton Land Bank's Budget for the 2025 budget year. In May of this year the Lan Bank was successful in their first sale of property at 118 S Kansas Ave for $3,465. The budget also included a $10,000 ask to utilize as seed money to be allocated from the Lincoln Park settlement.
At the June 20th meeting of the Newton Land Bank next steps will be taken to set policies on real estate procurement and continued growth of the land bank.
