 Hillsboro Industries
Hillsboro Industries broke ground Friday on its new Newton manufacturing facility on East First Street. The Hillsboro-based truck bed and trailer manufacturer plans to build a 56,000-square-foot facility to build aluminum livestock trailers and will create about 50 new full-time jobs in Newton.
The company bused in all its current employees from Hillsboro to participate in the groundbreaking Friday. Welcome this great company to our community!
The City's burn pile near Centennial Park
Storm cleanup
Debris removal from the May 19 storm continued this week, with City crews moving to Maintenance Area 3 on Thursday afternoon. The contractor, Alfred’s Superior Tree Service, is still working through Area 1. The City and Alfred's both plan to have crews working Saturday.
So far, City crews have collected 8,114 cubic feet of debris, and Alfred's has collected 2,548 cubic yards. The debris pile near Centennial Park is growing, and once conditions are right, City staff will begin burning as allowed per our state burn permit. Most trees downed from the cemetery were turned into mulch by Park staff since they were cedar trees. All other trees from around the city are either at or bound for the burn pile.
Staff is planning to do a second pass through Areas 1 and 2 (the worst hit) after the first round of collection is complete. Since Areas 3-7 have had longer to get debris to the curb, a second pass may not be necessary in these areas. Also, City staff need to get cleanup completed so regular seasonal maintenance can begin on streets.
 Fischer Field
The turf replacement is now complete at Fischer Field. The contractor, Hellas, completed the project on time, and the turf looks great.
2025 budget
The City Commission will hold the second budget work session next week, 8 a.m.-noon June 4. The meeting will be held at City Hall and is open to the public. It will also be livestreamed and available for later viewing on the City's YouTube and Facebook channels.
The first budget work session was held May 22 and is available for viewing online.

Splash park
Springlake Splash Park has sadly not been able to open for the season yet this year, and it may be a while before it can. Earlier this month, as we prepped the system for the season, we found an electrical issue and had to order new wireless transmitters. The vendor now says it will be at least two weeks before they receive the parts to build our transmitters.
We know this is disappointing for Newton families and kids, and we will keep you updated on progress.
