Engineering & Building
This week, Engineering staff:
- Held a pre-construction meeting for Washington Road water and sewer improvements. Construction will begin Feb. 19. During the water line work, there will be times when the southbound traffic on Washington Road between Pizza Hut and Kwik Shop will be down to one lane southbound. Construction is anticipated to take about a month. Dondlinger Construction is the contractor.
- Held a pre-construction meeting for Fox Ridge Phase 1 water, stormwater, and paving improvements. Construction will begin next week or the following with demolition of the Fox Ridge clubhouse. Pearson Construction is the contractor.
Newton Public Library
The library project remains on schedule. The roofing subcontractor will be back next week to finish up. Installation of the front canopy will begin soon. The dirt crew will begin grading around the building on Feb. 26. Installation of the interior signage is underway, shelving will be done next week, and all interior finishes are nearing completion.
SW 24th Street Bridge
Construction is underway on the SW 24th Street bridge. The contractor, King Construction, is working to chip out portions of the bridge deck on the south side that need to be patched.
Cow Palace sewer
Construction is underway on the Cow Palace sewer extension. Nowak Construction’s subcontractor Atkinson Road Boring started boring the sanitary sewer main under U.S. 50 this week. The sewer extension will run along Cow Palace Road to serve Full Vision.
Street & Sanitation
- Finished sweeping the snow route today.
- Repaired damaged traffic control signage.
- Replaced mailboxes at Fox Meadows that were removed due to a water main repair.
- Removed the old fuel island at the new Parks facility.
- Completed four utility cut repairs.
- Began the process of grading unpaved roads.
- Potholed the snow route with cold mix asphalt.
- Prepared for possible winter weather on Sunday.
Bulky Item Tagging Program
From Jan. 29-Feb. 2: Our inspector tagged 41 locations. Eight were charged the $20 fee, eight scheduled a bulky item pickup and were charged the $10 fee, one was forwarded to the environmental control officer, and 24 were taken care of by the resident.
Water/Wastewater
Service Center Staff
- Responded to two after-hours calls this week.
- We have received 2,952 Plumbing Materials Surveys to date.
- Repaired a leak in the 100 block of Allison; in the process, we found and removed a lead service line.
- Repaired a leak in the 500 block of S. Magnolia; in the process, we found and removed a lead service line.
- Repaired a leak in 600 block of Blaine.
- Replaced a fire hydrant at Meridian and Broadway (Utility Supervisor Doug McFall pictured).
- Shut off 62 meters for non-payment.
Wastewater Treatment Plant Staff
- Repaired/replaced roof drains on old chlorine building.
- Reviewed the Draft NPDES permit for the plant.
- Repaired a water leak in the Influent Pump building.
Mission Plant Staff
- Worked on the RFP for Well #7 inspection and rehabilitation.
- Replaced the chlorine bottle alternator/switch.
- Continue preparing Well #13 paint inside the building.

Parks & Cemeteries
- Picked up litter and dumped trash in the parks.
- Removed a dead pine and began removing a locust in Athletic before it got too windy.
- Began pulling picnic tables out of service that have sharp edges on them.
- Prepared two graves and closed one for this week.
- Road maintenance in Greenwood Cemetery.
