Officer-involved shooting in Topeka ends without injury
TOPEKA, Kan. – The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) is investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred Friday morning in Topeka, Kansas.
The Topeka Police Department (TPD) requested the KBI conduct an investigation on Friday, May 23, at around 1:20 a.m. KBI agents responded to the scene.
On Thursday, May 22, at around 11:54 p.m., the TPD was dispatched to investigate a domestic disturbance. Officers went to the residence at 1500 SW 24 St. to make contact with a man identified as Dustin C. Kuney, 33, of Topeka.
Officers attempted to communicate with Kuney, who was alone in the residence, and at 12:54 a.m., Kuney fired shots from the doorway of the residence. Three TPD officers returned fire in response. The gunfire ended and Kuney surrendered to officers at the scene. No law enforcement officers or citizens were injured in this incident.
Kuney was arrested for aggravated domestic battery and aggravated assault of a law enforcement officer, and was booked into Shawnee County Department of Corrections. Formal charges are pending. All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
This independent investigation aims to discover all events leading up to the officer-involved shooting. In police use of force cases, the KBI releases details to the public as soon as possible. This information is preliminary in nature, and is based on evidence collected and early statements of the parties involved, witnesses, medical personnel and others. It does not represent final or thorough findings which take several weeks to complete.
When this investigation concludes case findings will be presented to the Shawnee County District Attorney for determination of charges. The investigation is ongoing.
