Did you know that participation in the Vaccines for Children (VFC) and Vaccines for Adults (VFA) Programs include the possibility of unannounced storage and handling site visits? This requirement is outlined in #11 of the VFA and VFC Provider Agreement.
The purpose of these visits is to assess a provider location’s compliance with VFC/VFA storage and handling requirements and to evaluate staff knowledge of best practices.
Provider locations selected for unannounced visits may be based on:
- Previous storage and handling compliance issues
- Length of time since the last site visit
- Geographic proximity to locations receiving compliance visits and related follow-up
Unannounced storage and handling visits are separate from compliance site visits and any associated follow-up.
During these visits, reviewers evaluate vaccine storage units, digital data loggers (DDLs), and overall storage and handling procedures in accordance with VFC/VFA requirements and the Vaccine Storage and Handling Toolkit.
At the conclusion of the visit, reviewers will meet with appropriate staff to discuss findings. This conversation highlights strengths, recognizes best practices, and identifies any areas that may require follow-up or improvement.
If you have any questions about storage and handling visits, please contact your Regional Immunization Nurse or the Nurse on-call at 877-296-0464.
Since January has passed and we are well into February, it’s time to discontinue RSV vaccination during pregnancy. The recommendation to discontinue RSV vaccination for individuals 32 through 36 weeks pregnant is Jan. 31 of each year, which aligns with the RSV season. RSV vaccination of pregnant women 32 through 36 weeks gestation should resume on Sept. 1.
As RSV continues circulating, it is recommended to continue to immunize infants younger than 8 months of age with Nirsevimab (Beyfortus) or Clesrovimab (Enflonsia) through March 31. The RSV preventive antibodies provide immediate protection. Some children aged 8 months through 19 months who are at increased risk for severe RSV should receive Nirsevimab during their second RSV season.
For additional vaccination guidance see the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) Immunization Schedule or the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) Immunization Schedule.

Shared clinical decision-making is an important part of current vaccination guidance, particularly when recommendations vary and individual health risks and personal preferences should be considered. As immunization guidance continues to change, it is critical for healthcare professionals to know when and how to use shared clinical decision-making to support informed patient choices.
North Dakota State University’s (NDSU) Center for Immunization Research and Education is hosting a live webinar on Feb. 24, 2026. Presented by immunization experts, this webinar will provide an overview of shared clinical decision-making in immunization, explain the roles of both providers and patients, and discuss practical approaches for integrating shared clinical decision-making into routine care.
