Vaccine Information Statements (VISs) are documents produced by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to educate patients, parents, and legal guardians of the risks and benefits of each vaccine.
The National Childhood Vaccine Injury Act requires healthcare providers to provide a copy of the current VIS prior to administering the vaccine.
The VISs are updated frequently and can be downloaded from the CDC or Immunize.org and are available in multiple languages.
The most recent updates are for pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine (PPSV23) and pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV), reflecting changes in recommendations for routine use of PCV in adults 50 years and older, as well as the limited use of PPSV23.
Please discard outdated VISs and replace with the latest versions.
The Kansas Immunization Program is excited to announce some changes designed to better serve providers. The program is restructuring from nine regional immunization nurses to seven. This update will streamline services and enhance support across the state.
An updated map showing the new regional assignments is available. If your location is transitioning to a new regional nurse, be on the lookout for an email from them introducing themselves and providing further details.
For any questions or clarification, don’t hesitate to reach out to the nurse on call at 877-296-0464 or by email.
Thank you, for your attention to this update, and for your continued dedication to immunization efforts.
Due to upcoming federal holidays, vaccine orders placed in late June or early July may experience longer-than-usual delivery times. To ensure delivery by early July, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends submitting Vaccines for Adults (VFA) orders no later than June 20, 2025. For Vaccines for Children (VFC) orders placed the first week of July, please expect longer delivery times.
Important dates:
- Thursday, June 19 – Juneteenth holiday. No vaccine delivery.
- Friday, July 4 – Independence Day. No vaccine delivery.
For any questions or concerns, please contact your regional immunization nurse or email kdhe.vaccine@ks.gov for assistance.
Thank you, for your understanding, and for your continued dedication to protecting the health of Kansans.
CDC and FDA work together to manage the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS), a vaccine safety monitoring system. Anyone - patients, parents, healthcare providers, and vaccine manufactures - can and is encouraged to report an adverse event to VAERS. Completing a VAERS report is a simple process that provides valuable information to ensure the continued safety of vaccines.
Healthcare providers are required by law to report adverse events listed by vaccine manufacturers as contraindications to further doses of the vaccine or any adverse event listed in the VAERS Table of Reportable Events. VAERS also serves as a continuous monitoring system for vaccine safety.
Healthcare providers are also encouraged to report vaccine administration errors and any adverse events that occur after a licensed vaccine is administered even if it’s unclear whether the vaccine caused the event. While it is important to take the time to avoid vaccine administration errors, humans can make mistakes. Using VAERS to report vaccine administration errors allows for persistent administration errors to be identified.
VAERS encourages online reporting at Report an Adverse Event to VAERS. While more information is appreciated, reports at minimum require patient age, date of birth, and sex; vaccine brand name and dosage; date, time, and location administered; date and time when adverse event(s) started; symptoms and outcome of adverse events; and applicable physician contact information and medical tests. A VAERS checklist contains all accepted fields in a VAERS report that can be used to make sure all data elements are identified.
To support providers in assessing adult measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccination needs, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has developed a decision tree. This resource is designed to help providers quickly determine whether non-pregnant adults require additional doses of MMR vaccine based on risk factors, vaccination history, and laboratory evidence of immunity.
This decision tree is a valuable resource for reviewing a patient’s vaccination status and determining appropriate next steps when vaccinating adult patients.
