Information has been received from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on available influenza vaccines for the upcoming 2025-2026 flu season.
To adequately plan for the upcoming 2025-2026 flu season, the CDC requires all Vaccines for Children (VFC) or Vaccines for Adults (VFA) enrolled providers to complete an influenza vaccine pre-book early in the year, with a very quick turnaround time. The CDC then works with the vaccine manufacturers to implement contracts and ensure adequate doses are available.
All VFC and VFA providers are required to complete the flu pre-book survey indicating the number of doses and preferred vaccine brand requested for the 2025-2026 flu season no later than Friday, Jan. 31, 2025. Providers enrolled in the VFA program may request doses for use with uninsured and underinsured adults. Local Health Departments, Rural Health Clinics and Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs) may submit requests for special projects. For consideration, projects must include the number of doses requested, preferred vaccine brand, and must include details regarding the special project such as location and intended population that will be reached. Vaccines must be ordered in 10 dose increments.

Vaccines for Children (VFC) and Vaccines for Adults (VFA) enrolled providers are required to have a primary and back-up vaccine coordinator at each facility, with the option to designate a third coordinator if needed. These vaccine coordinators are responsible for ensuring that all vaccine-related tasks are completed, including vaccine ordering, monthly physical inventory counts, stock rotation, monitoring expiration dates, temperature monitoring and documentation and serving as the primary contact between the Kansas Immunization Program (KIP) and the facility.
Each year, staff serving in the vaccine coordinator roles (primary, back-up and secondary contacts) are required to complete two updated Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) training modules: The “You Call the Shots Vaccines for Children Program (VFC)” and the “You Call the Shots Vaccine Storage and Handling” modules. VFC and VFA Coordinators should now take the opportunity to complete this annual requirement. We also encourage anyone who receives vaccine shipments or administers vaccines to take the courses as well.

The Influenza-Like Illness Surveillance Network (ILINet) sites monitor patients for influenza-like illness (ILI), which is defined as symptoms of a fever (>100⁰F) and the presence of a cough and/or sore throat. During the week ending Oct. 12, ILINet sites reported 2% of visits were due to ILI. Syndromic surveillance indicated that 5% of emergency departments visits in Kansas were due to ILI. All data is subject to change. Influenza activity across the state is currently minimal.
During the week ending January 18th, the Kansas Health and Environmental Laboratories reported three positive influenza A/H3 specimens and two positive influenza A/H1 specimens. As a reminder, outbreaks of any disease are reportable and should be reported to the epidemiology hotline at 877-427-7317. Stay updated on influenza activity.
