Each year, the flu significantly impacts the health and well-being of children and their families. Annual flu vaccination is the most effective way to protect children from the flu and its potentially serious complications.
To ensure optimal protection, children should receive the flu vaccine every flu season.
Some children aged 6 months to 8 years may need two doses of the flu vaccine this season:
- Those being vaccinated for the first time,
- Those who have previously received only one dose of flu vaccine, or
- Those with an unknown flu vaccination history.
For these children, it’s important to administer the first dose as soon as the vaccine is available, as the second dose should be given at least 4 weeks after the first.
Immunize.org has put together a Guide for Determining the Number of Doses of Influenza Vaccine to Give to Children Age 6 Months Through 8 Years. This easy-to-follow chart will help vaccine providers determine if a child needs a second flu vaccine. You will want to save this valuable resource!
Immunize.org recently updated the clinical resource Hepatitis A, B, and C: Learn the Differences. This valuable tool includes updates to the treatment sections and the new link for Hepatitis C treatment options from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
You will want to add this resource to your education toolkit!
The Influenza-Like Illness Surveillance Network (ILINet) sites monitor patients for influenza-like illness (ILI), which is defined as symptoms of a fever (>100⁰F) and the presence of a cough and/or sore throat. During the week ending November 23trd, ILINet sites reported 3% of visits were due to ILI. Syndromic surveillance indicated that 2% of emergency departments visits in Kansas were due to ILI. All data is subject to change.
Influenza activity across the state is currently minimal. During the week ending December 7th, the Kansas Health and Environmental Laboratories reported one positive influenza A/H3 specimen. As a reminder, outbreaks of any disease are reportable and should be reported to the epidemiology hotline at 877-427-7317. Stay updated on influenza activity.
