On Nov. 14, 2024, the Kansas Immunization Program (KIP) was notified by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) that lots of Novavax COVID-19 vaccine with an expiration date of 11/30/2024 will not be granted a shelf-life extension. Doses currently in provider stock with the expiration date of 11/30/2024 should continue to be administered through this date.
Currently, the CDC does not have any Novavax COVID-19 vaccines expiring after 11/30/24, so vaccine shipments are on hold until new inventory with a later expiration date becomes available. The CDC anticipates that provider orders will resume shipping by the end of next week.
Novavax is currently in the process of requesting a shelf-life extension for lots that will expire on 12/31/2024.
Please contact your Regional Immunization Nurse or Nurse On-Call at 877-296-0464 if you have any additional questions.

As fall and winter virus season arrives, it’s time for annual vaccinations to help prevent serious illness. After receiving your COVID-19 or RSV vaccine, remember to sign up for V-safe, a vaccine safety monitoring system that informs the CDC about your health following vaccination.
Anyone receiving the updated 2024-2025 COVID-19 vaccine, RSV vaccine, or a maternal RSV vaccine can sign up for V-safe check-ins via text or email. Registering and completing check-ins is quick and easy.
Simply sign up using a computer, tablet, or smartphone. Personal information is kept secure and confidential, and you can opt out anytime.
After vaccination, complete a two-minute check-in daily for the first week, followed by one check-in per week for six weeks.
Participation in V-safe aids the CDC in monitoring vaccine safety.
The Influenza-Like Illness Surveillance Network (ILINet) sites monitor patients for influenza-like illness (ILI), which is defined as symptoms of a fever (>100⁰F) and the presence of a cough and/or sore throat. During the week ending October 12th, ILINet sites reported 2% of visits were due to ILI. Syndromic surveillance indicated that 1% of emergency departments visits in Kansas were due to ILI.
All data is subject to change. Influenza activity across the state is currently minimal. During the week ending Oct. 12, the Kansas Health and Environment Laboratories reported no positive influenza specimens. As a reminder, outbreaks of any disease are reportable and should be reported to the epidemiology hotline at (877)427-7317. Stay updated on influenza activity on our dashboard.
