Now that we’re halfway through summer, it’s time to think about back-to-school immunizations. Vaccinations are critical to keep students of all ages healthy. Healthy students mean healthy schools and healthy communities.
Vaccinate Your Family recently launched a Back-To-School Routine Immunization Campaign to promote the importance of immunizations for school-aged children and adolescents. Their FirstDayVax Toolkit is available in English and Spanish. Go check it out!
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in collaboration with the Public Health Foundation, released a new self-guided online training course, Fostering a Culture of Immunization in Your Practice.
When the entire clinical team is engaged and communicates effectively about the importance of immunizations, patients receive their vaccinations safely and on time. This online course provides communication strategies and resources to help immunization providers create a positive culture of immunization in their clinics.
The course consists of four lessons:
- Lesson I – Fostering a Culture of Immunization
- Lesson II – Importance of Immunization and Factors Impacting Vaccine Uptake
- Lesson III – Five Strategies for Fostering a Culture of Immunization
- Scenario Based Learning Activity

CDC data show that vaccination coverage among kindergarteners has declined to its lowest level in decades and an estimated 750,000 young learners entered kindergarten during the COVID-19 pandemic who were not up to date on their school vaccinations. A recent uptick in global and domestic measles cases and outbreaks underscore that under- and unvaccinated children are at risk for serious illness. Routine immunization catch-up is a goal we can achieve by working together. CDC calls upon health care providers, education professionals, and trusted community messengers (with materials also available in Spanish) to help keep kids healthy, in school and ready to learn.
