Hello,
Kansas has seen an increase in scam phone calls in which the caller states they are from the Kansas Board of Healing Arts or another state agency and then may attempt to extract identifying information or payment information from the professional. The number showing on caller ID often appears to be the correct Board of Healing Arts number. The scammer may reference an “investigation” as a scare tactic. However, please be aware that Board staff will never call you seeking payment information over the phone. Further, it is generally not the practice of the Board investigators to provide an initial notification of an investigation of a professional via a phone call. Professionals are generally notified of an investigation by the Board via a letter. If you receive an unusual call from someone purporting to be from the Board of Healing Arts and seeking identifying information or payment information, please end the call and then contact the Board directly at the number found on our website www.KSBHA.org and we can direct you accordingly. Please be aware Kansas is not unique in this situation. These scammers are perpetrating this scheme nationwide.
The FBI has recently listed four best practices for licensees to avoid becoming a victim of a scheme:
- Use official websites and official phone number to independently verify the authenticity of communications from alleged law enforcement or medical board officials.
- Independently contact those boards or law enforcement agencies to confirm the identity of the person(s) contacting the provider.
- Do no provide personal identifying information (Social Security Number, date of birth, or financial information) in response to suspicious emails, phone calls, or letters and do not provide professional information (medical license number, NPI number, of DEA license number).
- Be wary of any request for money or other forms of payment regarding supposed criminal investigations by alleged law enforcement agencies or regulatory entities.
Thank you and Have a great day.
