UPDATE TO: KCSO Investigating Suspicious Death in Northern Kent County
--UPDATE--
NELSON TOWNSHIP, Mich: A joint investigation involving the Kent County Sheriff's Office (KCSO) and Greenville Department of Public Safety (GDPS) has resulted in an open murder charge against a 44-year-old Sand Lake man following the death of a 28-year-old woman on Monday.
At approximately 10:52 a.m. on November 2, Kent County deputies were dispatched to a residence in the 12700 block of Gillman Avenue NE, near Lincoln Lake Avenue and 19 Mile Road, after a woman reported that a man covered in blood had arrived at her home claiming he had been stabbed. She called police after he left the residence, before deputies arrived.
A short time later, KCSO deputies located and stopped the pickup truck on 18 Mile Road near Pine Lake Avenue. The 44-year-old driver was injured and deputies provided immediate medical assistance, including the application of a tourniquet. He was airlifted to a local hospital for treatment.
Deputies also located an unresponsive and critically injured 28-year-old woman in the vehicle. Deputies and medical personnel attempted lifesaving measures, but she was pronounced dead at the scene. The victim has been identified as Holly Luna of Greenville.
At the same time, GDPS Officers were investigating a suspicious situation called in by a family member of Luna and were actively looking for both her and the pickup truck driven by the suspect. While canvassing the Greenville area, Public Safety Officers were advised of the situation unfolding in Kent County. It was then determined the vehicle and subjects involved in the KCSO investigation were related to the investigation in the City of Greenville.
A joint investigation began between KCSO and GDPS, processing crime scenes and reviewed business and traffic camera footage within the City of Greenville. The investigation continued throughout the day, with the decision that Montcalm County was the appropriate jurisdiction for criminal charges.
Following a review of the investigation, the Montcalm County Prosecutor's Office authorized one count of open murder and one count of carrying a weapon with unlawful intent against the 44-year-old man. The suspect was released from the hospital following treatment and lodged at the Kent County Jail.
At the request of Montcalm County, the Michigan Attorney General's Office was asked to assign a special prosecutor, with the Kent County Prosecutor's Office being selected and requested to handle the case due to the significant involvement of KCSO.
The suspect's name will be released following his arraignment, which is expected to take place in the coming days.
The Kent County Sheriff's Office and Greenville Department of Public Safety extends their condolences to Holly Kay Luna's family and loved ones. We want to thank the community for their support during this investigation.
If you have information that could help to move the investigation forward, please call the KCSO at 616-632-6125, or submit a tip to Silent Observer online or at 616-774-2345.
