Shooting Leaves Woman Dead; Son Charged with Murder
ALGOMA TOWNSHIP, Mich. — A 56-year-old woman was killed, and her 30-year-old son is facing a murder charge following a shooting in Algoma Township.
On October 15, 2026, just after 9:00 a.m., Kent County Sheriff's Office (KCSO) deputies responded to the 1200 block of Indian Lakes Road for reports of a shooting. When deputies arrived, they found 56-year-old Diane Kilmar-Luman dead inside the home from multiple apparent gunshot wounds.
Family members who were inside the home told deputies that the suspected shooter, the woman's 30-year-old son, had fled in a vehicle.
KCSO deputies and Michigan State Police troopers immediately began searching the surrounding area, using available resources and technology to locate the suspect. A short time later, an undercover KCSO detective spotted the suspect near Ritchie Avenue and 14 Mile Road. His vehicle had broken down, and he was getting into another vehicle when deputies took him into custody without incident.
Investigators later learned that the suspect had called a rideshare to pick him up after his vehicle broke down.
As the investigation continued, detectives completed search warrants at the home and of the suspects' vehicle. Investigators recovered multiple spent bullet casings, and the victim had suffered numerous gunshot wounds.
The suspect, 30-year-old Ryan Hansen, was charged by the Kent County Prosecutors Office shortly after the shooting and arraigned today in 63rd District Court on charges of homicide-open murder and felony firearms. He was not given a bond.
This remains an active investigation by the Kent County Sheriff's Office. More charges may follow after continued investigation.
All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
If you have information that could help to move the investigation forward, please call the KCSO at 616-632-6125, or submit a tip to Silent Observer online or at 616-774-2345.
