Overnight Vehicle Theft Arrests
ADA TOWNSHIP, Mich: An overnight vehicle theft spree ended with four stolen vehicles recovered and two juvenile suspects in custody.
Around 3am, deputies responded to the Adaridge/Adapointe area for a report of a vehicle that had just been stolen from the owners driveway. During the response, four stolen vehicles fled from Kent County Sheriff’s Office deputies. Investigators later determined the vehicles had been stolen overnight from multiple communities across West Michigan.
As the vehicles were leaving the Ada neighborhood, a deputy successfully deployed stop sticks, flattening tires on three of the four vehicles.
The vehicles continued westbound on Fulton Street toward I-96 and then I-196. One vehicle was located abandoned at Ada Cemetery, another was found abandoned on I-196 near Fuller Avenue, and two others crashed in the S-curves in Grand Rapids.
The drivers of both vehicles involved in the crashes fled on foot. One suspect was quickly taken into custody. The second suspect entered the Grand River in an attempt to evade responding officers and K9 teams. Grand Rapids Fire Department personnel assisted in safely removing the suspect from the river after he swam to a rock.
Both suspects taken into custody are juveniles. They will be lodged at the Kent County Juvenile Detention Center following medical clearance.
All four stolen vehicles were recovered. The investigation remains ongoing as detectives work to identify and locate the additional suspects involved.
We would like to thank the Grand Rapids Fire Department, Grand Rapids Police Department, Wyoming Police Department, East Grand Rapids Department of Public Safety, Walker Police Department, and Michigan State Police for their assistance. We appreciate their teamwork and responsiveness to assist.
