Low-cost, Nature-based Programming Returns to Kent County Parks this Summer
GRAND RAPIDS, MI. (June 3, 2026) — The Kent County Parks Department is excited to continue its partnership with Blandford Nature Center to host Nature Neighbors—a series of low-cost, nature-based programs designed for all ages—in six of our parks this summer. Nature Neighbors offers a wide variety of educational experiences aimed at helping residents connect with the environment, each other, and the natural world around them.
“We designed the Nature Neighbors series to create meaningful outdoor experiences that are welcoming to people of all ages and backgrounds, and we’re grateful for the support of private donors who helped make this program possible,” said Sammy Dine, Educator at Blandford Nature Center. “Our hope is that participants leave feeling more connected to the natural world and to one another through shared experiences in nature.”
Here are just a few of the fun, interactive programs offered through Nature Neighbors:
-
Sensory Experience (ages 2-6): Engage your senses on a guided nature walk—touch, smell, listen, and look. Includes a take-home sensory activity.
-

-
Discovering Owls (ages 5-12): Learn where owls live and what they eat through hands-on exploration, including owl pellet dissection.
-
Bumblebee Nature Walk (ages 5-12): Enjoy hands-on nature exploration walks guided by a Blandford educator. Kids get exploration backpacks to use during the program..

“Nature Neighbors demonstrates the impact of strong community partnerships,” said Ben Swayze, Kent County Parks Department Director. “By working alongside Blandford Nature Center and with the support of generous donors, we’re creating opportunities for people of all ages to learn, explore, and connect in our parks.”
