Flooding Update & Public Damage Reporting Request
KENT COUNTY, Mich: Kent County Emergency Management continues to monitor elevated river levels following several days of sustained rainfall across the region. Water levels have increased along the Grand River and Thornapple River.
According to the National Weather Service, the Grand River near Comstock Park measured 14.7 feet Tuesday morning, above the 12.0-foot flood stage. The river is expected to crest around 15.4 feet Wednesday before gradually falling below flood stage by early Sunday.
The Thornapple River near Caledonia measured 9.5 feet Tuesday morning and was expected to crest near 10.0 feet around midnight, briefly reaching flood stage before falling below it Wednesday.
High-flow conditions have been observed at the LaBarge, Cascade, and Ada Dam facilities, which are operating as designed. While this event is not among the most severe historically, flooding may still impact low-lying areas, including homes, basements, roads, parks, and trails near the rivers in Comstock Park, Plainfield Township, and Caledonia.
Residents are encouraged to report flood-related damage using the county’s self-reporting survey to assist with local damage assessments. Fill out the survey here.
Residents should remain alert, avoid driving through flooded roadways, obey barricades, and stay clear of fast-moving water. Continue monitoring official updates as conditions may change. For additional flood safety information, visit: http://www.weather.gov/safety/flood.
