Child Fatally Struck by Vehicle in Northern Kent County

CITY OF CEDAR SPRINGS, Mich: Throughout the investigation, the suspect was referred to as the father of the child by the suspect, people on scene, and through dispatch calls. It was later determined he is a father-figure of the child and fiancé to the mother of the child.

UPDATE
CITY OF CEDAR SPRINGS, Mich: The preliminary investigation determined that the driver of the pickup truck, a 33-year-old Cedar Springs man and the father of the 3-year-old child who was struck, was driving recklessly at the time of the crash.
The suspect was arrested and lodged at the Kent County Correctional Facility on a charge of Reckless Driving Causing Death. Investigators also believe alcohol may have been a factor in the crash. He is expected to be arraigned early next week.
Additional charges may be sought as the investigation continues.

CITY OF CEDAR SPRINGS, Mich: On April 3, 2026, just after 4:00 p.m., KCSO deputies and Michigan State Police, along with area fire and EMS personnel, were dispatched to the 13000 block of Darcy Circle NE for a report of a child struck by a pickup truck.
Emergency crews arrived quickly and immediately began life-saving measures. Despite their efforts, the child died from severe injuries sustained in the crash.
The Kent County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Safety Unit and Investigative Division responded to the scene to conduct a thorough investigation.
Our thoughts are with the child’s family, loved ones, and the community during this incredibly difficult time. Incidents involving children are especially difficult for everyone involved, and we also recognize the police, firefighters, EMS personnel, and dispatchers who responded and worked this tragic scene.
The investigation remains ongoing.
