GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (January 15, 2026) – All Kent County offices and Health Department clinics will be closed on Monday, January 19 in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.
The Kent County Correctional Facility will remain open with regular hours; however, all other services will be closed. The Department of Public Works (DPW) administrative offices will also be closed on January 19 but all other DPW facilities, operations, and services will remain open for regularly scheduled hours.
MLK Days Of Service - Volunteer Opportunities
As a reminder, many of our parks will remain open, offering access to more than 100 miles of trails across the county. Our Parks Department is also inviting community members to give back through hands-on stewardship projects that help protect the county’s 43 parks, trails, and waterways.

MLK Service Day - Porcelain Berry Busters
Saturday, Jan. 17 from 1-3 p.m. Hansen-Johnson Trail Connector: Corner of Riverbend and Butterworth Dr.
Volunteers will help control the porcelain berryan invasive vine that threatens native plants, wildlife, and trails - along the Hansen and Johnson trails. This beginner-friendly stewardship event includes a short educational component. Registration is required.

MLK Jr. Weekend Day of Service & Solidarity
Saturday, Jan. 24 from 1-3 p.m. Parks Administration Building: 1700 Butterworth Dr. SW
Hosted in partnership with the GVSU Community Service Learning Center, volunteers will assist with invasive species control and forest restoration projects that support long-term park and trail health at Millennium Park. Registration is required.
