Parole Absconder Arrested After Pursuit in Plainfield Township
PLAINFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich: At approximately 1:20 p.m. today, Kent County Sheriff’s Office Investigative Division Detectives, in coordination with a Community Services Deputy and Road Patrol units assigned to Plainfield Township, attempted a traffic stop at 5 Mile Road and Northville Drive NE on a 46-year-old male wanted on a parole absconder warrant stemming from prior convictions for armed robbery and second-degree murder.
Detectives located the suspect as a passenger in a green SUV and initiated a traffic stop. The driver, unaware of the reason for the stop, complied with deputies and exited the vehicle. The passenger, however, slid into the driver’s seat, stole the vehicle, and fled from the traffic stop.
Deputies pursued the suspect east on 5 Mile Road, north on East Beltline Avenue, west on West River Drive, and north on Jupiter Avenue. During the pursuit, the suspect struck multiple vehicles, but no injuries were reported. The suspect crashed in the 5700 block of Jupiter Avenue NE, exited the vehicle armed with a knife, and broke a window near the front door to forcibly enter an occupied senior living building.
Deputies began evacuating residents and methodically checking rooms throughout the facility to locate the suspect. After finding him, deputies used both de-escalation tactics and a beanbag shotgun to safely take him into custody at approximately 2:00 p.m. The suspect sustained minor injuries, was treated at the scene, and lodged at the Kent County Correctional Facility for additional charges related to this incident and the open parole violation warrant.
This was a dangerous individual who is now off the streets. Incidents like this are infrequent, but our deputies train regularly for these high-risk situations to ensure the best possible outcomes. We are thankful for their professionalism and teamwork that led to a quick and safe resolution, and for the assistance of the responding partner agencies, including the Grand Rapids Police Department, Michigan State Police, Walker Police Department, and Plainfield Township Fire Department.
The suspect’s name will be released following arraignment.
