 Kent County's Operation Green Light Initiative Returns On November 4, to Honor Veterans
2,000 Free Green Light Bulbs Available For The Public To Participate
Grand Rapids, Mich. (October 21, 2025) - Kent County Veterans Services (KCVS) is proud to announce the launch of this year’s Operation Green Light initiative and will distribute 2,000 green light bulbs to light the county green in support of veterans.
From November 4 - 11, residents and local businesses are encouraged to swap out their outdoor lights for green bulbs to show support for military veterans and highlight the resources KCVS offers. Now in its third year, Operation Green Light is a nationwide initiative led by the National Association of Counties and the National Association of County Veterans Service Officers.
The week-long observation will culminate with the annual United Veterans Council of Kent County’s annual Veterans Day Parade on Tuesday, November 11, at 6:00 p.m. in downtown Grand Rapids. The parade will begin at Lyon Street NW & Ottawa Avenue NW, proceed along Monroe Avenue NW, turn left on Fulton Street W, and conclude with a ceremony of remembrance at Veterans Memorial Park.

“Operation Green Light is a powerful, visible moment of unity, and its importance for our veterans cannot be overstated,” said Ryan Grams, Director of Kent County Veterans Services.
This campaign raises essential awareness about the unique challenges veterans face, from accessing benefits to mental health support, and shines a spotlight on the vital local resources available to them.
How to Participate
KCVS invites all government entities, organizations, residents, and businesses to join the effort! Beginning October 20, residents can pick up a free green light bulb, thanks to a generous donation from Consumers Energy, at the following locations:
Light bulbs will be handed out on a first come, first served basis as supply is limited.
- Residents can also help spread the word by downloading and posting promotional posters and social media graphics, located at kentcountymi.gov/veterans.
