KCSO Officer Involved Shooting
GAINES TOWNSHIP, Mich: On July 22, 2025, just after 9:00 a.m., deputies were called to a home near Fontenelle Street SE and S Division Avenue SE in Gaines Township. A caller reported that a 66-year-old man was armed and acting aggressively toward them inside the house.
When deputies arrived, the man pointed a gun at them before going back inside. Deputies called for backup and brought in additional resources and technology while trying to de-escalate the situation.
After some time, the man came back out armed and crawled underneath part of the home. He fired several shots, putting both deputies and neighbors at risk. Two deputies fired their weapons in return. The man was struck by gunfire and taken to the hospital by ambulance, where he remains in critical condition.
No deputies or assisting agency officers were hurt. The two deputies involved are on paid administrative leave, which is standard procedure after an officer-involved shooting.
We’re thankful no one else was injured and recognize the deputies for taking action to protect the people involved and the surrounding community.
The Wyoming Police Department is handling the investigation. They will release additional information as it becomes available.
The past few days have been difficult for our Gaines Township and Lowell communities: loss of life in a domestic violence incident, a tragic plane crash, and now an officer-involved shooting stemming from another domestic violence incident. These events have impacted those involved, the first responders, and our county as a whole.
Our team at KCSO is working around the clock, not only to respond to these incidents with care and professionalism, but to ensure the safety and well-being of our community. Sheriff Michelle Lajoye-Young and Undersheriff Bryan Muir are proud of our staff for their bravery, their commitment, and their professionalism during this time.
