Kent County Sheriff's Office Joins Statewide "Click It or Ticket" Seat Belt Enforcement Campaign
KENT COUNTY, Mich: The Kent County Sheriff's Office (KCSO) is participating in the Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning's (OHSP) "Click It or Ticket" campaign, running from May 19 through June 1, 2025. This initiative aims to increase seat belt usage and reduce traffic fatalities.
During this period, KCSO deputies will conduct high-visibility patrols, focusing on seat belt compliance. Michigan law mandates that drivers, front-seat passengers, and passengers under 16 years old must wear seat belts. Violators may face a $65 fine.
In 2023, Michigan reported 223 fatalities involving unbelted vehicle occupants, accounting for 39.5% of all traffic deaths where seat belt use was known. Additionally, 285 individuals were ejected from vehicles while not wearing seat belts; 66 of these incidents were fatal.
The "Click It or Ticket" campaign coincides with the Memorial Day holiday, a time when road travel increases. KCSO urges all motorists to wear seat belts on every trip, regardless of distance.
