Welcome Plan Coordinator, Hollin attended alongside interns, Judith and Juana, who proudly participated in the cultural fashion show.
The West Michigan Asian American Association’s Asian College Student Night
At the West Michigan Asian American Association’s Asian College Student Night, students enjoyed an evening filled with engaging games, excellent food, and a welcoming atmosphere that celebrated community and connection. Special thanks to Bing Goei, Minnie Morey, and all who helped make this meaningful event possible.
The Welcome Plan was proud to attend and share information about available resources for immigrant and refugee students in West Michigan. Events like this highlight the importance of fostering inclusive spaces where students from all backgrounds feel supported.
We look forward to future college nights and continuing our collaboration with the West Michigan Asian American Association.
Expanding Access to Driver’s Licenses in Our Immigrant Communities
Language should never be a barrier to opportunity. That’s why increasing the number of multilingual driving instructors is key to improving access to driver's licenses for immigrants and refugees in West Michigan.
With the help of our Driver’s License Toolkit, individuals can better understand the steps needed to get a license.
But we also need more instructors who can provide driver’s training in multiple languages.
Treetops Collective is helping lead this effort by funding two new multilingual driving instructors in Kent County for 2025.
-
You’ll be trained and licensed through Michigan Traffic Safety.
-
Complete on-the-road hours with Cox-McKenzie School of Driving.
-
Earn income while helping others in your community achieve independence and mobility.
Are you interested in becoming a multilingual driving instructor? If so, visit the job description here!
By growing the network of multilingual instructors, we can make sure that more immigrants have the support they need to navigate the road safely—and confidently.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: Immigration Status Termination Messages May Have Been Sent in Error
Many community members have recently received emails or text messages stating that their immigration status has been terminated.
If you received a termination notice without any identifying information, it may not be specific to your case. In some instances, generic messages have been sent in error and do not reflect actual changes in immigration status.
Specifically, if you received a UHP (Uniting for Ukraine) parole termination notice, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has confirmed that those messages were sent in error.
If you're unsure whether a notice applies to you or how to respond, it is recommended you consult with a legal service provider or immigration attorney who can provide guidance based on your individual case. Here are a few local nonprofit immigration law providers:
-
Immigration Law and Justice - intake line: (616) 320-2734
-
Lighthouse Immigrant Advocates – intake line: (616) 221-5542
-
Michigan Immigrant Rights Center – intake line: (734) 239-6863
New Federal Registration Rule Now in Effect
As of April 11, 2025, all non-citizens are required to register with the federal government.
-
You may already be registered but it is essential to confirm with a legal service provider.
-
Mandatory address updates must now be reported.
-
All non-citizens age 18 and older are required to carry documentation of their registered status at all times.
If you need guidance, please contact one of our local nonprofit immigration law providers:
-
Immigration Law and Justice MI – (616) 320-2734
-
Lighthouse Immigrant Advocates – (616) 221-5542
-
Michigan Immigrant Rights Center – (734) 239-6863
It is important to know your rights and understand what documentation you may need to carry.
This is not formal legal advice, but critical information about a federal law that will affect many in our community.
Federal Funding Cuts Impact Refugee Families in West Michigan – Your Help is Needed
In January 2025, the federal freeze on refugee resettlement funding left many families in West Michigan without vital support. In response, local groups like the Kalamazoo Refugee Resource Collaborative (KRRC) and faith communities are stepping up. Despite the uncertainty, our community’s resilience shines—volunteers and agencies are working hard to ensure no family is left behind.
Now, we need your help to build a sustainable, local support network.
Here’s how you can make a difference:
-
Community Interpreters: Support Power of Attorney and emergency planning workshops.
-
Immigration Attorneys: Volunteer at clinics to offer vital legal help.
-
Faith Institutions: Join a collections network to fund local resettlement efforts.
-
Volunteer Drivers: Provide transportation for essential appointments.
Every action matters. Help us welcome every refugee family with open arms.
Join us—take the Community Support Network Survey today!
Let’s ensure that every refugee family who chooses West Michigan as their new home is welcomed with open arms.
USCIS Ombudsman Office Closed
The Office of the Citizenship and Immigration Services Ombudsman has closed. This office used to help with problems or delays in immigration cases.
If you're experiencing delays or issues with your application, consider reaching out to your U.S. representative or senator for assistance. The Office of Global Michigan (OGM) recently met with Senator Slotkin’s office, and they are ready to assist with immigration issues. The OGM is also willing to triage referrals with the Senator’s staff.
Important: You should only contact one office—either your U.S. representative or one of our senators. Contacting multiple legislators can slow down the process. Choose one office and submit your request for help.
