Two Fatal Crashes Under Investigation in Cascade Township
KENT COUNTY, Mich: On April 20, 2025, the Kent County Sheriff's Office responded to two unrelated fatal crashes involving pedestrians that occurred along 36th Street SE in Cascade Township.
At approximately 10:00 p.m., deputies were dispatched to the 6600 block of 36th Street SE where a 54-year-old Grand Rapids man had been struck while adjusting a load of scrap metal in the bed of his pickup truck. The vehicle was stopped on the shoulder of the roadway. A 74-year-old male from Marquette, driving westbound, struck both the victim and the vehicle. The driver remained on scene and was transported to the hospital for minor injuries. The victim was pronounced deceased at the scene. Alcohol and visibility are being considered as possible contributing circumstances.
At 11:18 p.m., deputies responded to a second crash near the 5300 block of 36th Street SE. A 43-year-old man from Burbank, Illinois was struck outside of his semi-truck, which had been parked in the center turn lane. The vehicle involved, driven by a 31-year-old man from Grand Rapids, was traveling eastbound when the collision occurred. The victim was transported to the hospital in critical condition and later died at the hospital. Alcohol is not suspected as a contributing factor.
Both incidents are being actively investigated by the Kent County Sheriff's Office Traffic Safety Unit. The crashes occurred in close proximity and timing but are unrelated.
