Kent County Community Action Marks May as a Month of Impact
GRAND RAPIDS, May 12, 2025 – Kent County joins the nation in celebrating Community Action Month in May, dedicated to recognizing the success of the national Community Action Network, originally created in 1964. Kent County Community Action (KCAA) has been a vital safety net in West Michigan, offering crucial support in times of need - from putting food on the table and keeping the heat on, to ensuring stable housing and providing essential transportation. But their work goes beyond immediate crises, empowering residents towards greater self-sufficiency.
"Community Action Month is a powerful reminder of the difference our dedicated team makes right here in Kent County," says Gustavo Perez, Director of KCCA. "Whether it's helping a family overcome a utility emergency or ensuring a senior receives a nutritious meal, we're focused on building stronger, more resilient communities, one neighbor at a time."
The past year alone demonstrates KCCA's significant reach: they distributed over 113,000 food boxes, served over 20,000 culturally relevant meals to seniors, prevented hundreds of families from eviction, and provided over 13,000 rides for those needing access to healthcare, jobs, and community. Their impact extends to improving local infrastructure and weatherizing homes, creating healthier and safer living environments. All this is amplified by the incredible dedication of over 53,000 volunteer hours and the support of 221 partner organizations.

"The team at Community Action embodies the spirit of service, going the extra mile to support our most vulnerable residents," notes Al Vanderberg, Kent County Administrator/Controller. "Their dedication and impact serve as an inspiration, not just locally, but across the entire Community Action Network.
