Grand Rapids, MI (January 27, 2025) – Kent County’s new Fleet Services facility at 831 Ball is making waves as a model of energy-efficient design. The 14,000-square-foot vehicle maintenance and repair facility has received a $5,452 rebate from Consumers Energy for energy efficiency upgrades, which are saving 49,995 kWh annually—enough to power several homes for a full year.
“Time and again, we’ve seen the importance of making energy efficiency upgrades to not only operate more cleanly but more cost-effectively as well,” said Lauren Snyder, vice president of customer experience for Consumers Energy. “We were proud to work with Kent County officials to ensure these savings happened up front when building their new facility. They’ve set an excellent example for other municipal organizations on the ease and impact of integrating energy efficiency into the construction process to save time and taxpayer dollars.”
The facility’s energy savings were achieved through advanced interior and exterior lighting systems designed to surpass the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) code baseline for its type of building. These upgrades align with Kent County’s broader commitment to sustainability and cost-efficient operations.
“We are incredibly proud of the new Fleet Services building which showcases our commitment to environmental sustainability,” said Kent County Administrator Al Vanderberg. “With energy-efficient design and systems in place, we’re already seeing a reduction in energy usage, benefiting our operations and the environment. It’s truly a win-win for everyone.”
