Note from the Director
Dear Community Members,
The Kent County Animal Shelter is preparing for a temporary relocation to a new building, just one mile from our current site at 700 Fuller Avenue. The relocation is expected to take place on January 21st and be completed mid-March 2025, so we are in urgent need of residents to foster or adopt our available pets in preparation for this move. This transition is necessary to accommodate upcoming floor renovations and the shelter is also making several adjustments to its operations during this period.
The new location will focus on processing adoptions, intakes, and animal reclaims. However, space constraints will reduce canine kennel capacity from 79 to 40. Feline housing capacity will also be reduced, limiting the shelter’s ability to house animals. Strays will still be accepted, but the shelter must limit owned animal intake during this renovation.
With the reduced capacity and temporary nature of this move, we’re asking the community to prepare for pet emergencies by exploring alternative resources. We will continue to provide assistance for those in need by way of care supplies, food and rehoming resources. We will remain committed to our policy to not euthanize healthy adoptable animals for space or length of stay, but we will need the help of the community to achieve this.
Your support is greatly appreciated,
Angela Hollinshead Director, Kent County Animal Shelter

Details About Fostering
Thank you for considering opening your heart and your home to an Animal Shelter pet. Our volunteer foster program gives our pets who are most vulnerable a safe place to recover, grow, decompress, and socialize. Most foster commitments are short term, and for this move we are only expecting participants to foster through the completion of our renovations.
To foster, individuals are only required to be over the age of 18 and have the ability to provide a safe and loving environment. And the shelter will provide all veterinary and basic care items for your foster pet.
To learn more about becoming a foster or to sign up, please email KCAS@kentcountymi.gov.
