Cedar Springs Man Attacks Grand Rapids Township Fire Lieutenant
GRAND RAPIDS TOWNSHIP, Mich: Just before 4:00 PM tonight, the Kent County Sheriff's Office was called by a Lieutenant with the Grand Rapids Township Fire Department requesting assistance at their fire station, located at 1836 East Beltline Ave, for a 40-year-old Cedar Springs man who was suicidal. As KCSO deputies were driving to the fire station, the Fire Lieutenant requested an emergency response from the deputies.
Our preliminary investigation revealed that the Lieutenant was working alone at the fire station and let the man into the garage because he thought the man was there to work on the concrete. It was learned that the man was suicidal, had consumed illicit drugs, was in possession of a firearm, and began physically assaulting the Lieutenant. When KCSO deputies arrived at the fire station they saw the man actively assaulting the Lieutenant. Deputies physically restrained the man and arrested him.
The Lieutenant sustained several injuries and is seeking medical treatment at an area hospital. KCSO prays for the Lieutenant's recovery.
The Cedar Springs man is in the custody of the Kent County Correctional Facility, and it is anticipated that the Kent County Prosecutor's Office will review this case.
