A Message From the Administrator
It has been great to be out and among people again. I have had the opportunity to speak to various groups recently and have enjoyed getting to know more of our County organizations and people.
A major highlight of this activity was the State of the County event hosted at the Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park last Wednesday. The venue was amazing, the food was great, and Judge Smolenski did a brilliant job of emcee as she typically does. Chair Stek provided comments, we showed the newly released video that portrays “Max” experiencing County services; and then I provided remarks. Click here to view the State of the County speech and read the article below for Max's video. Shoutouts to Kent County Communications and Government Affairs Director Lori Latham, and Amy LeFebre of Truscott Rossman who lived the State of the County for the past few months. Also, shoutouts to Sanda Vazgec, Steve Kelso, Katie VanHevel, and the rest of the staff who helped with research and event logistics.
I also spoke recently at the Ada/Cascade Rotary Club and the Churchmen’s Luncheon Group and I am speaking at the Lowell Rotary Club this week. Jenny James and I recently facilitated strategic planning for the Rockford City Council. I even spent a couple of hours riding around Cannonsburg with Parks Supervisor Dan DeLoof and Doug Gale, owner of resort. Fridah Kanini, Founder and CEO of A Glimpse of Africa, invited me to an event that her group sponsored, “Processing the Tragedy as a Community,” where mostly African immigrants interacted with City of Grand Rapids officials regarding the Patrick Lyoya tragedy. In short, its been great meeting people and learning about issues and opinions.
I hope that you find this Administrator’s Digest message informative and as always we welcome your suggestions for articles or general improvement.

County Receives Highest Bond Rating from Major Credit Agencies & Excellence in Financial Reporting Award
(Jeff Dood, Fiscal Services Director)
For the 24th consecutive year, two of the nation’s major credit agencies, S&P Global and Moody’s, affirmed Kent County’s perfect bond rating with a AAA rating. This rating reflects the County’s prudent fiscal management, continued strong operating fund balance and liquidity, moderate long-term debt, and pension leverage. It also incorporates our large and growing tax base, solid population and employment trends, strong educational attainment, and resident income profile.
Kent County was also awarded the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting by the Government Finance Officers Association for the fiscal year ending December 31, 2020. This is the highest form of recognition in governmental accounting and financial reporting and represents a significant accomplishment by a local unit of government and its management. We have received this award for the past 21 years.
