Hello Friends and Neighbors,
Spring is here, and we need your help keeping West Lafayette looking beautiful! Please remember the following important guidelines for leaf vacuuming during Spring Leaf Collection:
✅ DO:
-
Place leaves loose at the curb (do NOT bag them) until 4/30/25
-
Ensure tree branches are trimmed to at least 8 feet above sidewalks and 15 feet above streets to allow clear access for sanitation trucks
-
Pile leaves neatly near the curb for easier collection
- Maintain a 12-inch gap between leaf piles and the curb to ensure proper water flow to the storm drains. Never place piles on storm drains.
❌ DON’T:
-
Use bags or toters
-
Leave piles blocking sidewalks or roadways
-
Mix in sticks, trash, or other debris with leaf piles
Vacuuming Leaves for a Cleaner, Greener West Lafayette
Pictured below is the leaf vacuum we’ll be using during the Spring Leaf Collection. This eco-friendly method helps keep our community green by reducing plastic bag waste, simplifying curbside pickup for our crew, and ensuring leaves are ready for composting. By leaving your leaves loose, you’re supporting a cleaner, more sustainable West Lafayette!
To refresh your memory on the rules and regulations, take a moment to check out the City ordinances regarding leaf and yard collection, waste removal, recycling, and preparation for pickup, or visit our website for helpful hints: https://www.westlafayette.in.gov/services/waste-and-removal
- Sec. 32-23 Container placement for pickup
- Sec. 32-28 Preparation for pickup
- Sec. 32-29 Responsibility for collection
- Sec. 32-49 For collection and removal of waste. recyclables, and yard waste
Color-Coded for a Cleaner Community
We know that sorting waste can sometimes feel confusing—but it doesn’t have to be! A quick glance at your toter lid is all it takes to help keep West Lafayette clean and green.
🖤 Black Lid = Trash All general household waste that can’t be recycled or composted goes here.
💛 Yellow Lid = Recycling Toss in paper, cardboard, aluminum cans, glass bottles, and plastic bottles. Just be sure all items are clean, dry, and empty—no food residue allowed! Reminder: Cardboard with grease or food stains (like pizza boxes) belongs in the trash, not the recycling bin!
💚 Green Lid = Yard Waste This is for leaves, small branches, and other organic yard debris.
By following the lid color guide, you’re doing your part to reduce landfill waste, recycle properly, and keep our community eco-friendly. Every small action counts!
