FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
West Lafayette, IND. (October 3, 2024) - The West Parks and Recreation Department, in partnership with the West Lafayette Tree Friends, is set to commence a tree pruning initiative this fall in the City's rights-of-way. The primary goal of this effort is to enhance the structural integrity and longevity of our beloved urban canopy.
Key Guidelines for Tree Pruning:
- Street trees require 15 feet of overhead clearance on the street side to facilitate the movement of fire trucks and sanitation vehicles throughout the City.
- All trees must maintain 8 feet of clearance over the sidewalk to ensure pedestrian safety.
- Trees located between the sidewalk and the street fall within the City's rights-of-way and are eligible for pruning by the City and volunteers.
- The pruning activities will be carried out by City staff, Tree Friends, and AmeriCorps teams.
- Homeowners are encouraged to participate in the pruning of these trees.
Pruning trees is a critical practice that contributes to the health, appearance, and safety of the trees and their surrounding environment. For the pruning schedule and updates, please visit our website. Please note that dates and times are subject to change due to weather conditions.
